When Sylvia posted about an open role at Prism the Gift Fund on her university alumni Facebook group, she didn’t expect that one short message would bring her future teammate all the way from Los Angeles.
Both Sylvia and Brianne studied at Wellesley College in Boston, a university known for its close-knit alumni network and tradition of women supporting women. After moving to the UK, Sylvia shared a post with her fellow graduates about what she loved most about working at Prism: the supportive team and the exposure to UK philanthropy.
Transfering US experience of philanthropy to UK sector
That post travelled thousands of miles and reached Brianne, who was preparing to get on a plane and relocate to London. She’d spent months looking for a role where her experience in US philanthropy would be valued.
“I’d decided to stop applying for jobs until after my move,” says Brianne, “but I saw Sylvia’s post just a few days before my flight and thought it sounded too good not to try. The day I flew out to the UK, I got an email inviting me to interview — it felt like fate.”
“The way Sylvia spoke about the role really stood out, I was looking for a place that would see my American experience as an asset – somewhere that aligned with my values and would give me a meaningful opportunity to settle in the UK.”
The power of global networks
A few weeks later, Brianne interviewed with Prism and joined the Relationship Management team.
“It’s amazing how one connection can lead to another. It really says something about Prism’s culture that people who work here are so likely to recommend it to others,” says Sylvia. “There’s a real balance here – it’s professional and fast-paced, but also friendly and supportive. You can tell people genuinely enjoy what they do.”
Philanthropy in the UK
At Prism, no two days are the same. The work is fast-paced and varied, supporting a wide range of donors, collective funds and charitable projects around the world. The team is made up of people from different backgrounds and nationalities, all united by a shared commitment to making giving easier and more impactful.
“You get this incredible exposure to the whole charity and philanthropy scene in the UK — it feels like you’re right at the hub of it,” Sylvia says.
For Brianne, the move has been life-changing.
“Moving to a new country is daunting,” she says, “but Prism has been the best landing place I could have hoped for. It’s made all the difference -the team has been so welcoming and supportive, and I just feel really happy and excited to be here.”
