In the third blog of our Collective Fund series, we want to focus on our Memorial Collective Funds and the importance of providing an efficient and reliable charitable vehicle for friends and family who wish to commemorate those they have lost. Fundraising in memoriam is about honouring the memory and legacy of the individual who has passed. Prism’s Memorial Fund model offers a swift fundraising solution by providing expertise in compliance and due diligence, and absorbing all administrative responsibilities. This gives friends, families, and communities the time to come together and make a positive impact to honour those they have lost.

One of our Memorial Collective Funds, the Be More Laura Foundation, was set up last year by Nicola and Mark Nuttall to raise money in memory of their daughter, Laura, who passed away in May 2023 from glioblastoma. As a family they have raised tens of thousands of pounds for vital research into glioblastomas, and they continue to work hard to support this under-funded area of cancer research. Their goal is to help fund research into new treatments for brain cancer to improve patient quality of life, increase life expectancies, and, ultimately, find a cure. Laura’s family shared more about their mission here:

“We set up the BeMoreLaura Foundation in memory of our daughter who died aged just 23 from an aggressive brain cancer called glioblastoma. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer, yet historically this devastating disease only receives 2% of the cancer research spend. Laura was appalled by this statistic and campaigned fiercely to raise awareness. It felt important that we continued Laura’s legacy by helping to fund research specifically into glioblastoma and the fight for better, kinder treatments for those who receive a similar diagnosis. Following a recent meeting at the Institute for Cancer Research, we have now made our first formal pledge to grant £30,000 to support Professor Chris Jones with his innovative work on glioma.

We chose to set up the foundation as a collective fund because we didn’t really have the time or expertise to set up a freestanding charity but knew that Prism could support us with their wealth of knowledge on compliance and due diligence with the added benefit of being able to claim gift aid on donations, something that can make a huge difference to a small foundation like ours.”

As part of Prism’s bespoke service all our Collective Funds have a dedicated Relationship Manager who will facilitate all administrative activity on the account. This can include: claiming gift aid on donations, due diligence and compliance checks on charities, and setting up crowdfunding platforms such as Just Giving, to allow family, friends and colleagues to fundraise. Prism can also ensure donations are restricted – as needed – to guarantee all the funds reach their intended destination, generating the most impact in the desired charitable initiative and ensuring a lasting Legacy.
