After a devastating earthquake struck south-eastern Turkey and neighbouring Syria on Monday, it is estimated that at least 33,000 people have lost their lives across both countries. It is feared that this figure is expected grow, as UN aid chief Martin Griffiths expects the death toll to at least double. More than 20 million people are believed to be affected as thousands of buildings have collapsed and infrastructure destroyed.
An enormous international relief operation was swiftly deployed to the affected areas in hope of finding survivors within the 72-hour window, critical to finding people alive. However, a week on from Monday’s earthquake, the focus is now on recovering bodies trapped under the rubble of destroyed infrastructure.
Prism’s Collective Fund (CF) Choose Love is working quickly to respond, committing funding to regional partners on the ground carrying out crucial search and rescue missions, as well as those providing urgent supplies to deal with the unfolding aftermath. So far, Choose Love has raised over $2,000,000 for its emergency earthquake appeal and committed $2,135,000 to 19 organisations on the ground.
